Grading System
Higher Education System
The Higher Education System of Argentina consists of more than 1700 institutions of tertiary education and 91 universities. All together there are more than 1.3 million students registered in these institutions. Education within the state education system is free. Private universities have a monthly fee. A university degree is conferred after five or six years of full time study and implies a professional as well as an academic formation in the specialized area of study. Furthermore, universities may grant a minor degree after completion of the first part of a longer study program (usually after three years) that would enable employment in the specific field of study. Most universities are divided into “colleges”. Students register in these colleges to study specific areas called careers. In general, the academic year includes two four quarter periods. A full time student would take three to four subjects called “materias” per quarter. Each subject consists of 4 to 6 hours of class per week. University Programs have study programs between 4 to 6 years of study and lead to a degree of “Licenciatura” or a professional degree such as doctor, lawyer or engineer. The academic calendar is from March to December, with a short break in the month of July. Spanish is the official language in Argentina and all courses are delivered in Spanish. Universities and tertiary institutions have an open admission policy.
Diplomas and Degrees Granted
Docente (Elementary Teacher): granted after 3 ½ years of post-high school studies.
Profesorado (High school teacher): degree granted after completing 3 to 4 ½ years of post-secondary (non university) studies or 3 to 4 ½ years of university studies (in general this degree includes an area of specialization).
Licenciate: first degree from the university, generally after five years of full time study and a final Project.
Professional Degrees: granted after completion of 5 to 6 years of study as a full time student: Ingeniero/a (engineer); Arquitecto/a (architect); Abogado/a (lawyer); Médico/a (doctor).
Postgrados: can be specialized area studies, certificate programs, masters programs called “maestrías” and PhD programs called “doctorados”. The length of study will depend on the individual program. These programs should not be confused with U.S. degrees of master and or PhDs.
Letters of recommendation
How to write a letter of recommendation
When students apply to undergraduate and graduate programs in America, the application process usually includes at least two recommendation letters from teachers or professors who can honestly evaluate the student`s academic ability and potential as a scholar. These count a lot in making the decision on whether or not to accept the student so it important that you provide the admissions committee with the kind of information that is most helpful.
